Fabric Standards

All Smitten Merino fabrics are Oeko-Tex 100 certified (Label number: HKKO 050555) and our merino wool is produced at an RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certified facility.

Our fabrics are produced at ABMT Textiles in Melbourne Australia, an Oeko-Tex 100 and RWS Certified facility.

ABMT is powered by its own 1400 solar panel plant and has its own onsite water treatment plant making it the most environmentally responsible merino knit manufacturer in the world.

Oeko-Tex certified products are completely free from harmful chemicals and safe for human use. To attain Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, the fabric has been tested and certified to be free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances known to be harmful to human health.

The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is a statement that sheep are treated with respect to their Five Freedoms:

  1. the freedom from hunger and thirst;
  2. the freedom from discomfort;
  3. the freedom from pain, injury or disease;
  4. the freedom to express normal behaviour; and
  5. the freedom from fear and distress.

Zero Waste

Underpinning our brand is a strong desire to be sustainable and ethical. One of our practices is making use of all the fabric when we are cutting the smitten garments, so our delightful cutters (thanks Cathy and Carmen) are vigilant in making sure any spare merino is used up as beanies, headbands or mittens. We are continually striving to aim for zero waste!

Another initiative we have started is the use of certified worm-friendly 100% biodegradable postage bags instead of standard plastic satchels to send out our online orders. These bags are Home Compostable, breaking down in your compsot bin in a matter of months! So much better for the environment.
